A Smart and Meaningful Choice

Are you students who are about to undertake your thesis work in the spring of 2026? Are you interested in doing your work in something that makes a real difference and contributes to Holmen's future working methods? Then this thesis project could be something for you.

Today, grinding and roll maintenance is performed at all three Swedish units within Holmen Board & Paper: Iggesund, Hallsta, and Braviken. At all facilities, it is assessed that time utilization can be increased, and parts of the roll maintenance are also procured from external suppliers. We see an opportunity to develop and optimize operations together within the Swedish units of Board and Paper, and that is where you as a student come into the picture.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate:

  • How do we conduct the most cost-effective roll maintenance for Holmen Board and Paper while maintaining quality and delivery capability?

The scope of the thesis will be:

  • Review of existing operations.
  • Mapping of the various sites' operations today
  • Inventory of efficiency improvement opportunities within each operation
  • Assess the possibility of jointly developing operations

The goal is for you to:

  • Develop a well-thought-out proposal for efficient and future-proof roll maintenance
  • Quantify and report on efficiency opportunities
  • Create a plan for how implementation could be done.
  • Summarize this in a feasibility study report that will serve as the basis for directional choices for continued pre-projecting.

As you can see, through this thesis, you will work on something that is directly value-creating for Holmen as a company, and you will work on "a real case" and meet many of our engaged colleagues.

  • We prefer that the work is carried out by 2 people together.
  • The location is flexible, but you will need to visit Holmen's three units regularly, so a location in Iggesund, Hallstavik, or Norrköping is preferred. You will perform the work partly at our Swedish units and partly remotely.
  • Since the work will be extensive and require a significant amount of time, we need students who are doing thesis work at the master's level (D-level).
  • We believe that you are studying Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar type of education.

The assignment is proposed to start as soon as possible in 2026 and end in June 2026. The exact timing for the implementation of each step will be determined after consultation with the client. The work will be reported according to school requirements and orally to the client and stakeholders.

If you have questions about the work, please contact one of the department heads below:

The application deadline is 5/2, but apply today as we would like this work to start as soon as possible.
